What Is a Covert Camera?

When thinking of the term covert cameras, one might think of spy movies where people are filmed in ways that they wouldn’t expect such as a camera in a pen, car keys or some other every day object. Although this may seem reserved for Hollywood, there are situations where these cameras are used in practice for the purpose of gaining information unbeknownst to the person whose picture is being taken.

Spy cameras are nothing more than a video camera that has been strategically hidden from view so that it can record any activity in a given area. They have become increasingly popular now that many people are out of the house for most of the day and would like to know what happens when they’re away.

The most obvious purchasers of these types of camera would be nervous parents that want to keep an eye on the person caring for their small or infant children in their absence. Many of these cameras are made famous when the film reveals abuse on the part of the Nanny and the video clip makes headline news. These covert cameras are typically placed in common objects that don’t draw much attention such as statues, picture frames or various other knick knacks. Hidden cameras are not just used by parents to catch the Nanny, but are often used to monitor the behavior of older children when the parents aren’t home. Commonly seen with teenagers, these covert hidden cameras give parents a way to insure that all at home is as it should be.

Monitoring children isn’t their only use. Those with unruly pets are also making use of spycams to keep an eye on Fido or Fluffy. Pet owners that deal with the destructive behaviors of their pets while they’re away gain added insight into what is causing the behavior and just how the destruction is accomplished so it can be prevented in the future. Although it might seem obvious that a cat or dog isn’t going to know what the camera is or what it does, some pet owners simply prefer hidden spy cameras to one that is sitting on a tripod in the middle of the living room. This way they have the video surveillance they want, without unsightly camera equipment in the way.

Employers also make use of covert cameras to protect their company’s assets. In cases where you have many people moving in and around a commercial location, it’s difficult to determine who might be taking what in terms of theft. If the offending parties can see the surveillance cameras, it’s likely they can still steal while avoiding the camera. With hidden cameras, they are not going to know where the cameras are located and hence won’t be able to avoid detection. This allows the business owner to catch the whole thing on film.

Many municipal buildings are now making use of spy cameras, as in the case of the business owner, more people are becoming savvy to the location of the security cameras and are able to avoid being filmed. This is where having hidden cameras provides a big advantage over cameras that are mounted in plain view. Although video surveillance is always a good idea where public safety might be at issue, they can’t necessarily get all areas clearly. Having the covert hidden cameras provides an advantage in that since they are undetected those that would try to steal or commit some other crime are unaware of their presence and are more likely to be caught.

Some covert cameras are worn on an individual, concealed under a hat or some other type of clothing. News reporters will sometimes use them to get “undercover” information on a big story. They simply wear the camera while talking to a person of interest. This puts the person they’re speaking to at ease where as if they were to see a film crew, they might not be as willing to talk. These same types of setups are often used in law enforcement sting operations. Police use them to get confessions or relevant information on a specific crime. Again, people will tend to speak freely when they don’t know they’re being filmed.

Even the average person can use covert cameras to keep any eye on things or confirm their suspicions. Whether imbedded in a picture, light fixture or some other object, spycams are quite handy when trying to determine what happens when we’re not around. Once more people become aware of the presence of spycams and realize that any undesirable behavior might be filmed; it stands to reason that the likelihood of someone repeating this behavior is reduced. Covert cameras can be justified by this fact alone.

If you have suspicions about something going on in your home or place of business, hidden spycams might provide you with the information you need to take the next step. Easy to install and use, hidden covert cameras are the added tool you need to resolve those unexplained mysteries around your business or home.
